Consider the following as you predict the evolution of art music:
Guidelines:
- How will instruments evolve in the future? Will they still be made of the same materials? Will they still be used in a conventional manner?
- What role will technology play in the future of music?
- Will live performances be obsolete?
- Will music evolve based on a reaction against atonality or will it carry on down the path of atonality?
- Will music still be notated in the Western style?
- Will the tuning system still be the same?
- Use webpages under resources tab to determine how music may evolve in the next hundred years based on how 20th century music evolved out of the Romantic era.
- Write 2 to 3 minutes worth of music in the style your group comes up with. You are not constrained to standard notation. Finale is available on the computers you choose to write using conventional notation. Staff paper is also available online or in the classroom for non-standard notation. Blank paper is also acceptable if you choose to take a different route in terms of notation. In this case, you must be sure to explain how to read your music.
- Write one to two pages explaining your group's composition. Here you must use the resources in the resource tab to support your conclusion about how art music will evolve in the future. You must explain your stylistic choices using appropriate musical language. You must also explain your choice of instrumentation.
Guidelines:
- ONLY use resources found under the resources tab or handouts from class.
- Indicate on your score what instruments are playing what parts.
- You may use any instruments, standard or not. It may be electronic. It may be vocal. You can use one instrument or every instrument. You may use any combination of instruments. Be creative! Be daring! Be the future!
